Why are we paying high prices for gas when we have a resourouce of oil in the US?

To whom it may concern:

What a shocker! I was informed that we have oil in the United States that is larger than the Middle East's Reserve. I was just curious as to why we are still buying fuel from other countries and paying high prices at the gas pumps when we have a reserve in the US that is so large.
