To whom it may concern:

The country has three legs to stand on, Government, Markets and Civic. We have advocates for Government and for Markets, but we have forgotten the Civic leg. We all need to join Civic groups that work for the common good, like service groups, churches, and yes labor groups. If we are to thrive and grow again, we need to become envolved in civil society.

I mostly agree with you, Titopoet. Civic participation is important (have you read the book "Bowling Alone", which is all about this?). But also there's overlap: doing business locally at farmer's markets overlaps civic (or what I'd call community) and market, for instance.

People do need to come together and work for the common good of the people and not have the government control our lives.

I do agree with you. It's important for us to realize that we can make an impact, even through just joining one or two local organizations.

To do this requires a society that's not so wrapped up in work and the need to make money that there's actually TIME. We are spending more time in our cars and at work and less with our families. Money dictates so much of our lives. How do you legislate civic duty when the struggle for so many is just to survive?

Most people would agree with this in principle, but at the same time, most people won't go out of their way to help someone unless they get rewarded in a quick, tangible way. Human nature...

Community groups need to be genuine. If they work really for the welfare of the people, one should surely join it otherwise not.

Wow! I couldn't agree more. Remember Candidate Obama being attacked for his civic work? The sentiment was appalling, yet far too common from the Republicans.

I feel the same way, although it's unfortunate that there are not enough selfless people in the world to stop and create such groups, since this alone is a full time job that doesn't reap any benefits other than the fact that it's emotionally rewarding. You'd think that be enough. but nooooo....

Such a true statement, and the funny thing is these groups could dramatically increase their abilities with just the minimal of assistance.

Yeah, I think the current generation especially just doesn't become involved in our communities. Maybe we're disillusioned because it often goes unnoticed and activism does so little in terms of communicating to the government?

I think if we all did a little more to help our Civic duty we would have a lot less hurt in this and other countries! Way to go!

I agree with Scoobey that there is often overlap. I think you are not really helping you point by not giving concrete examples of how it is important to be involved in all three areas since there is that overlap.

If you ask me, it's a lost cause. Don't get me wrong, it's vital to have everyone involved in civic groups and in the community, but really how far does activism get you these days? Big brother with the green hand always has the last say!!

I mostly agree with this letter. I grew up in a society where values were taught in what you refer to as civic groups. It seems these days instead of becoming involved in society, children and their parents do little more than reach out via their computers and televisions. Real human contact is becoming less and less.

Very good point of view, I totally agree that government and markets should not forget about its people, yet in practice they miss the bottom line.

Not only do people need to belong to civic groups, but they need to learn how to function within civic groups that may have members who are not 100% carbon copies of themselves. This helps people learn compromise and give and take. There is far too much my way or the highway in today's world.

Civic duty humanizes the landscape of our nation. Our country is such a cynical place that people have trouble volunteering without payback. This is one aspect of our government about which we can afford to suspend our doubts and just DO.

I disagree that the government should support churches because it violates the first amendment. If a group of people from a church want to do civil work they should create an institution that is separated legally from their church.
