RE: Immigrant English Education

I agree with you, that people need to learn to read English, and they need to learn how to obey our laws and understand our cultural norms. There are SOME free or more often, cheap classes available (I work at a library, and it is my job to know about them) but they are few, far between, have long waiting lists, and are hard to find. Sometimes, immigrants who are struggling to make ends meet with 2-3 jobs might have a hard time finding time to fit them into their work schedule, even though they KNOW they need them desperately. As a stranger in a strange land, it can be pretty hard to figure out where to go for help. Help your local immigrant to find those classes, instead of getting mad at him. If nothing else, point him at the local public library. Save your next American friend the frustration.

If a business chooses to cater to clients who speak a language other than English- power to them. I agree that immigrants need to learn to speak English in order to function in our communities, BUT let's be honest here and admit that there are many people living in the United States (especially in cities) who just don't speak the language (yet). Or maybe they do speak English, but they are more comfortable doing business in their native tongue. I speak a foreign language fluently, but I'd rather bank in English. And by the way, Americans are NOTORIOUS for going to other places and expecting them not only to speak English, but also to serve our food, provide accommodations that are up to American standards, listen to our music, and play our movies.

The pilgrims came to America so that they could practice religion as they chose. Freedom of religion is a fundamental part of our nation. Not freedom FROM religion. If you want that, go somewhere like France where they wrote God out of their government. Even if you don't believe in God, belief in him is a huge part of our history. Don't say "under God" if you don't want to. But don't deprive us of the right to say it.

Legal immigrants must find their own help. It is not provided for them by the USCIS as part of the citizenship process. In most cases, legal immigrants must be residents for 3-5 years before starting the citizenship process. In the meantime there must be more opportunities for immigrants to learn and to become a part of American society instead of segregating or becoming isolated. I think this should come from you and me. Americans need to reach out a welcoming hand, rather than to look at all immigrants with suspicion and bigotry.
